Exploring the Famous Triangle Bars of Lawrence, KS: A Look into the Lives of the Bartenders who keep them Running.
Every weekend millions of college students decide where to spend their money. In Lawrence, KS, the options are usually narrowed down to the three triangle bars.
The Wheel, The Jayhawk Cafe, and Bullwinkles Bar are three popular bars located near 14th and Tennessee St.
“The proximity of the bars makes it easy for students to visit all three in one night, making all three bars very popular. The student-run atmosphere also sets us all apart from your average bar” Bull manager, Junior, Annie Bogart said.
Bogart has been working at The Bull for over a year now and just got promoted to manager. She said, although she favors The Bull, she enjoys going to all three bars.
“When I turned 21 and was finally able to bartend, I knew I wanted to work at one of the triangle bars. The reason I applied to The Bull was because of their smaller staff. I knew I was guaranteed lots of hours” Bogart said.
The size of each bar varies, with The Hawk being the largest and The Wheel being the smallest.
“I decided to apply at The Hawk because it seemed like fun. I wasn’t necessarily working to support myself financially, I do it more for the experience” Hawk employee, Junior, Charlotte Brock said.
Becoming financially stable in college is something a lot of students take into consideration when looking for jobs in the area.
“I knew I would be able to move up in the ranks at The Bull which is a big reason I chose to work here. At somewhere like The Hawk I just imagine it being harder to become a manager since there are so many of them” Bogart said.
There are currently 16 managers at The Hawk, only one of which is female. Brock spoke about her anxieties as a female bartender saying,
“At first I was nervous to work in The Boom Boom Room of The Hawk”, The Boom Boom Room is a dark room with LED lights in the basement of The Hawk, “The fast-paced environment scared me. Everyone is shouting in your face trying to get your attention, it’s hard when there are people you do recognize and a lot of people you don’t. Overall I would say it’s a high-stress environment but I am used to it now, and so far nothing has made me feel uncomfortable.”
Junior, Janie Mahaffy who works at The Wheel explained her circumstances as a female bartender,
“The Wheel is a very different vibe than those other bars. The lights are always completely on and there is a way larger bartender-to-customer ratio. Although some nights can be stressful, the vibe is overall very chill here. I am also fortunate to work with my brother, who helped me get the job. If I ever feel someone is making me uncomfortable he will take care of it.”
Although each bar offers the same services as the next, each work environment is different.
“I enjoy working at The Wheel, we all get together a few times a semester to hang out outside of work,” Mahaffy said.
“Working at The Bull doesn’t feel like work at all. We are a family and treat each other like one. I know I can count on these people in any situation which is very rare in a work setting. I think everyone should apply here and get to experience this” Bogart said.
Despite the fact that all three women have different experiences at each bar, they can all agree that giving out deals to their friends is the most entertaining part of the job.
