Rock Chalk Revue: A Spectacular Display of Talent and Creativity
Every year, the University of Kansas hosts a thrilling and unforgettable event that brings together students, alumni, and the entire community in celebration of talent and creativity. It's called Rock Chalk Revue, and it's one of the biggest student-run events at the University of Kansas. This year the show ran from Feb. 23-25.
Rock Chalk Revue is a variety show that features performances from different Greek Life organizations. These groups spend months preparing their acts, which include singing, dancing, acting, and comedy skits.
“Every day during the first semester I would spend 2 hours daily with my group perfecting our production,” said Junior Director Emmy Taranto, “Although it was time consuming, these people are like family now.”
The event started in 1949 as a fundraiser for the University's Glee Club. Since then, it has grown into a beloved tradition that attracts thousands of people each year. Senior director Luke Fritz spoke about the tradition of Rock Chalk Revue.
“My fraternity (Kappa Sigma) has not been in RCR in over 20 years, this means none of us have been a part of this tradition. I am very excited to see what it is all about” said Fritz.
The show is divided into several acts, and each act is judged by a panel of celebrity judges, including alumni, community members, and even local celebrities. The groups compete for awards such as Best Choreography, Best Performance, and Best Overall Show. This year's winner was ‘En Vogue’, a production put on by Sigma Kappa and Kappa Delta.
Rock Chalk Revue is not just about the performances, though. It's also about giving back to the community.
“Rock Chalk Revue is unique because it brings all sorts of people together to create something special while at the same time raising money. Something about the competitive
nature of it all creates a great opportunity to raise money” said Junior Adam Jolles, member of the Rock Chalk Revue Advisory Board.
All proceeds from the event go to a local charity, this year the charity was The Willow Center. Rock Chalk Revue raised over $31,000 for the beneficiary this year.
The event has also become a way for students to bond and create lasting memories. Many participants say that the months of rehearsals and the final show are some of the best times they have had in college.
“I will for sure be doing Rock Chalk Revue again next year, this experience changed my entire year and has honestly given me a purpose here at KU, I think a lot of my cast feels that way” said Taranto.
